How to make a multi-language form in Makeform

Translate your form into several respondent languages from the Languages button in the editor's top bar. Multi-language forms and AI translation require Pro or Business.

Is it free? No. On Free, the Languages button opens an upgrade prompt.

Steps

  1. Open the form in the editor.
  2. Click Languages in the top bar. The button shows the current language code, such as En.
  3. Pick the Source language. It locks after you save.
  4. Pick the Respondent languages and click Save languages.
  5. Under Translations, use Choose language, then click Generate missing to translate missing text with AI.
  6. Review the translations and edit any string that needs changes.
  7. Publish the form. Translations go live on the next publish.

What respondents see

The language switcher appears on the hosted form page when the owner has Pro or Business. It does not appear inside embeds. The form opens in its source language unless the link sets a language; it does not detect the browser's language automatically.

To share a French version, add this parameter to the form URL:

Text
?mf_locale=fr

Use the language code for the version you want to share.

Supported languages

You can translate into English (en), Arabic (ar), German (de), Spanish (es), French (fr), Italian (it), Japanese (ja), Korean (ko), Portuguese – Brazil (pt-BR), Russian (ru), Thai (th), Chinese Traditional (zh-Hant), and Chinese Simplified (zh-Hans). Arabic displays right-to-left.

Other ways to translate

You can ask the AI chat to translate the form or use the translate_form MCP tool on Pro or Business. Strings over 2,000 characters are left for you to translate by hand.

Makeform is a free AI form builder: describe what you want to collect and it builds the form for you, with unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan.

FAQ

Why aren't my translations live yet?

Translations go live on the next publish. After reviewing or editing strings, publish the form to make those translations available.

Can I change the source language after saving?

The source language locks after you save. Choose the language of your original form text before clicking Save languages.

How do I turn off multiple languages?

Use Turn off multilingual. This is the control for stopping the form's multilingual setup.

Can AI write a form in another language?

Yes. You can ask the AI in that language to write the form's own text, including in many languages beyond the 13 listed above. Writing the original text in a language is different from translating a form into several respondent languages.
