Purpose & expectations
Explain why you are asking before the first question.
Employees weigh the risk and value of responding before they answer. Open with the survey purpose, closing date, approximate scope, who will review results, and whether identifying details are collected. Avoid promising anonymity if links, hidden fields, or respondent fields can identify a person.
- State the workplace decision or listening goal in plain language.
- Distinguish anonymous responses from confidential handling.
- Explain when employees can expect a summary or next-step update.
