# How to password protect a form in Makeform

Password protection requires respondents to enter a password before opening and submitting your form. It is free on every plan in **Settings** > **Access**.

**Is it free?** Yes. Password protection is included on every plan.

## Steps

1. Open your form and click the **Settings** icon in the top bar.
2. In **Access**, turn on **Password protection**.
3. Enter a password of 8–128 characters. Passwords are case-sensitive.
4. Click **Save Changes**. Access changes take effect when saved; you do not need to publish.
5. Optionally, click **Preview password screen** to see the password screen.

Share the password with respondents separately from the form link. They need the password to open and submit the protected form.

## Find or change the saved password

Only the form owner can reveal and copy the saved password. Use **Reveal saved password** to see it or **Copy saved password** to copy it.

To replace the password, use **Change password**. People with access will need the new password, so share the replacement with the respondents who should still have access.

## Remove password protection

Turn off **Password protection**. In the **Remove password protection?** confirmation, choose **Remove protection**.

After protection is removed, anyone with the link can open the form if it is published and open.

Removing the password changes who can open the form. If you want to stop accepting submissions, see [close form rules](/help/features/close-form) for closing the form now, on a scheduled date, or at a submission limit.

Makeform is a free AI form builder: describe what you want to collect and it builds the form for you, with unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan.

## FAQ

### Do I need to publish after setting a password?

No. Access changes take effect when you save them. Click **Save Changes** after setting up the password.

### How long does the browser remember the password?

After a respondent enters the password, their browser remembers it for 24 hours. The password itself is case-sensitive, so respondents need to enter the same uppercase and lowercase letters you used.

### Can a teammate reveal the saved password?

Only the form owner can reveal and copy it. The owner can use **Reveal saved password** or **Copy saved password** when they need to retrieve it later.

### Does a password stop someone from submitting twice?

Password protection requires a password to open and submit the form. To accept only one completed response for each value in a selected field, use [prevent duplicate submissions](/help/guides/prevent-duplicate-submissions).
