# How to limit how many people can pick each option in Makeform

Set a response limit for individual choices using **Limit responses per option** in a choice field's options editor. This is free on every plan and works with Multiple Choice, Single Select, Checkboxes, and Multi Select.

**Is it free?** Yes. Response limits for individual options are available on every plan.

## Steps

1. Click the choice field in the form editor.
2. In its options, turn on **Limit responses per option**.
3. Type a number next to each option. Leave it blank for no limit, use `0` to make it full now, or enter a limit up to `999,999`.
4. Publish the form.

You can use these limits for workshop sessions, time slots, T-shirt sizes, or limited seats. Each option has its own limit, so you can leave some choices unlimited while setting a number for others.

## What counts toward a limit

Only published responses count. Test submissions count too, so include them when checking how many places remain. Partial submissions and deleted responses do not count.

Delete a response to free its place. Renaming an option resets its count, so take that into account before changing an option's name.

## What respondents see

Once an option reaches its response limit, respondents see it marked **Full**. If the last place is taken while someone is filling in the form, they see **One of your choices just filled up. Please choose another option.**

## Limit the whole form

To cap total submissions, use **Settings** > **Access** > **Limit number of submissions**. See [close form rules](/help/features/close-form) for the whole-form limit.

There is no automatic waitlist. A common workaround is to make a separate waitlist form and link to it from the closed-form message.

Makeform is a free AI form builder: describe what you want to collect and it builds the form for you, with unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan.

## FAQ

### How do I leave one option unlimited?

Leave its limit blank. A blank limit means no limit, while `0` means the option is full right now.

### Do test responses use up places?

Yes. Test submissions count toward the limit. Delete a test response to free its place; deleted responses do not count.

### Do unfinished responses count?

No. Partial submissions do not count toward option limits. Only published responses count.

### What happens if I rename an option?

Renaming an option resets its count. Keep this behavior in mind when editing a choice that has already received responses.
